Palm Kernel Oil

Elaeis guineensis

Composition

Palm kernel oil is primarily composed of saturated fats, with a high percentage of lauric acid and myristic acid.It also contains oleic acid and smaller amounts of other fatty acids.Specifically, it's about 48% lauric acid, 16% myristic acid, and 15% oleic acid. The high saturation level, particularly due to lauric acid, gives palm kernel oil its characteristic solid or semi-solid state at room temperature.

Origins

Palm kernel oil originates from the kernels of the seeds of the African oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis), which is native toWest Africa. While palm kernel oil is now cultivated in various tropical regions, its origins are primarily in the tropical rain forest region of West Africa.
